The Landscape of Craftsmanship, an exhibition by Siobhan McLaughlin
The first in a series of exhibitions showcasing the work of Scottish artists, Strathberry invites you to discover The Landscape of Craftsmanship, the latest collection by Glasgow-based artist Siobhan McLaughlin.
Siobhan McLaughlin is an artist and freelance curator based in Glasgow. Since graduating with a first-class MA (Hons) in Fine Art from Edinburgh College of Art in 2019, Siobhan has been awarded the inaugural SSA Wilhelmina Barns-Graham Award, a film commission from the Tate’s British Art Network, a Visual Art Scotland Cornwall Exchange Residency and the Stephen Palmer Travel Award.
Her art practice combines personal experience of walking with compositional and sustainable devices, to create non-traditional landscape paintings. While walking Siobhan gathers earth, stone, and plants to grind into painting pigment and then stitches together local remnant materials to create the base of her paintings. Through drawing, printmaking, painting, and installation she explores themes of place, memory, sustainability, and ecology.
Untitled (Lairig Ghru), Oil pastel and oil paint on mixed materials, 46x60cm. £1,100 (Left)
Mountain Pass (Lairig Ghru) Pencil, rock pigment and oil paint on mixed materials 120x140cm. £2,800 (Right)
The Landscape of Craftsmanship, Siobhan’s most recent series of work, takes inspiration from the muted pastels and understated hues of the Strathberry’s Autumn Winter collection - incorporating leather off cuts to create a circular exhibition that captures the brand’s inherent craftsmanship and the fragility of landscapes.
Siobhan says “I’m inspired by Strathberry’s commitment to handcrafted items, and their recent repurposing of waste materials from the wine-making industry to create a leather alternative. This kind of circular, sustainable process is integral to my work and for this exhibition I’ve integrated some off cuts from Strathberry’s workshop. Stitching together these remnant textiles to create the base for painting, embeds the stories of these materials within the landscape of the work”.
Exhibit runs from Thursday 17th - Tuesday 29th August
Strathberry Showroom
All paintings in this exhibit are for sale, with prices ranging from £220 - £2,800.
