Tales From Edinburgh

To celebrate The Edinburgh Festival in Strathberry’s home city, we’ve compiled our team’s top tips for exploring our city and discovering the place where Strathberry’s journey began.

1. “Escape the crowds to brave the water with wild-swimming in the North Sea, at Portobello Beach. Just a few miles from the city centre, grab a coffee from The Little Green Van, enjoy the Turkish baths or soak up the seaside charm with a slice (or two) of one of the city’s favourite authentic Italian pizza bars, at Civerinos on the prom.”

2. “Whilst exploring the Royal Mile, be sure to venture down some of the areas seventy ‘closes.’. Many of these narrow close lanes date back to the 12th century, or earlier, and are evidence of the city’s medieval beginnings. Hidden down these lanes are some veiled jewels, including Dunbar’s Close Garden. Laid out as it might have looked in the 17th century, when the area was one of the wealthiest parts of the city, it’s the perfect spot for a quiet coffee and rest bite.”

3. “Visit the vibrant Stockbridge area every Sunday to discover the artisanal flair of their local Farmer’s Market. A foodie’ lovers haven, where small independent traders showcase the best in Scottish food and drink, as well as crafts, vintage and vinyls.”

4. “You’ve visited the National Museum of Scotland, rubbed Greyfriar Bobby’s gold nose for luck and even spotted the headstone of Harry Potter’s infamous Tom ‘Riddle’ in the Greyfriars’s Kirkyard – time for a pit stop? Be sure to check out The Outsider on George IV bridge, for the most surprising and spectacular views of Edinburgh Castle while you dine.”

5. “Visit Edinburgh’s very own Wild, West, tucked away in the leafy suburb of Morningside. Whilst the area boasts charming cafes, specialist food retailers and charity shops full of vintage, it’s also home to an American- style ghost town. What was once an advertising gimmick for a Western Furniture Company in the mid ‘90s, is now a dilapidated and worn-out facade, something reminiscent of a Main Street inof a southwestern American cowboy town.”

6. “Nestled in the grounds of Lauriston Castle, boasting spectacular views from Cramond Island to the Firth of Forth, is Edinburgh’s own Japanese Friendship Garden. With bamboo shelters, avenues of blossom trees and tranquil water features, this zen-like garden celebrates the twinning of towns, of Edinburgh and the prefecture of Kyoto in Japan, and is rated one of the top three Japanese gardens in Britain.”

7. “Fancy a different perspective on the city? Work up an appetite with a stroll through Holyrood Park and a relaxed hike up Arthur’s Seat – the city’s very own extinct volcano. Aptly named, for its daunting, lion-like appearance that dominates the cityscape. Be sure to drop by the Sheep’s Heid Inn for a hearty, post-walk roast dinner!”

8. “All aboard! Looking for the perfect way to sample some of Scotland’s best local gin? Then join Summerhall’s Drinks Lab for their speciality Gin Cruise. Hosted by their expert mixologists, you’ll be invited to sample fantastic gin and delicious cocktails, while leisurely escaping Edinburgh on their private canal boat, for a two-hour trip along the Union Canal.”

9. “A beautiful oasis, just ten minutes from Princes Street, the Dean Village boasts a quaint and picturesque setting and spectacular architecture. Bordering the Water of Leith, follow the peaceful path to the West of the city, and enjoy a welcome break from the festival’s hustle and bustle.”

10. “More than just a museum or art gallery, Jupiter Artland is set over 100 acres of woodland and five indoor spaces, in the grounds of a 17th century Manor House, and boasts a rolling programme of exhibitions and events from leading national and international artists. Be sure to make a day of it, as this award-winning, contemporary sculpture park lies just outside the city.”
